Wild Wisdom: How Indigenous Knowledge Guides Sustainable Gardening and Foraging

Wild Wisdom: How Indigenous Knowledge Guides Sustainable Gardening and Foraging

Long before Michigan became a state, it was a land stewarded by the Anishinaabek, whose deep connection to the environment shaped the region's history and continues to influence it today. This class explores how Indigenous peoples cultivated Michigan's first gardens, introduced plant medicines that inspired modern pharmaceuticals, and understood the land as a living, reciprocal partner rather than a commodity. The Great Lakes region, often called the "Third Coast," is renowned for its thriving industries in grapes, cherries, and apples. Yet, what's less recognized is how the unique climate - its moisture, humidity, rugged winters, and fertile waters - not only fosters powerful plant medicines but also supports an extraordinary abundance of agricultural products. Indigenous peoples, guided by the sacred miigis shell, migrated to this region in search of manoomin (wild rice), a plant that became central to their culture, sustenance, and spirituality.

In this class, we'll delve into the Anishinaabek's profound relationship with the land, featuring personal experiences from an Anishinaabek wild forager who has roamed the deep woods of Michigan and carries an undeniable connection to these lands. Their stories will illuminate the wisdom passed down through generations and the intimate knowledge of plants, animals, and ecosystems that continues to guide sustainable living today. To enrich our discussions, wild foraged teas will be provided, offering a sensory connection to the plants and the land we'll be learning about.
